And then call us crooks. I forgot how much this job can shake your faith in humanity at times.

We just got a freaking Lotus customer who complained that we ripped him off on labor. He curb checked the whole right side of his Elise at around 50 mph. Suspension, wheels, heck, the damn rotors were cracked! He agreed to each repair and when he got the bill complained to us, our manage and to Lotus HQ. The guy is absolutely bonkers calling every day for a detailed status check. We had to finally drop around $2500 in labor just to get him out of here.
He came in this morning complaining that we scratched his door and wants it fixed....

What a douche. I hope management brooms him and doesn’t bounce it back on you guys.

My dad had a customer with a FJ40 that agrees to the work and time and then called everyday (starting less then 24 hours after the it was dropped off) and would berate the service writer that it wasn’t done... and then he would talk to my dad and act like he had no care in the world. Never know what to do with them...

we check the cars coming in and leaving the shop. That scratch/ding was not from our shop. He said he was going to blast us on the Lotus forums and all that. Hand to heart, we charged accordingly and did the repairs correctly unlike any independent shop. Some people man. What happened on your end?

Spent 3 hours last night with a customer figuring out what exactly is the car that they want and need and gave them an awesome deal that left us only a sliver of margin. He was supposed to come back today to ink the deal but spent all morning shopping us and got the guys across town to beat the deal. So he bought there.

People think we rip them off... yes we’re more expensive... but no we are not putting crappy parts in your car... and you’re FJ40 takes way longer just to get parts found then you think.

Customers are the worst part of every job I’ve worked. Good customers are refreshing, but they rarely make up for the rest.

I wish I could take my car to a shop like yours, Uly. You guys seem pretty awesome. Instead I have the dealership where the service tech told me “we don’t go looking for problems in people’s cars” when I brought it in because it had an open recall on the transmission (and some other non-engine related recalls) and they gave it back to me in one day. They hadn’t even looked at the trans, which it turns out was actually fucked, just the like the recall said it could be.
Don’t let the assholes get you down, my friend. You know you do good work, and your customers appreciate that.

apocalyptically harder with Lotus to get parts.
Professional work, why don’t people appreciate that?

If the car fits into the production range of cars effected in any recall or service bulletin and it’s still under warranty, they should not deny service. We get paid to do those jobs and the customer’s car is up to date. Win win. Those peeps down there need to step up their service game.

Yep. It was still under warranty. The warranty on the transmission had actually been extended because so many of them were being affected by the recall. But for real man, my jaw dropped when he said they don't go looking for problems. Then it took three months to get the new clutch in, but that wasn't their fault. Like I said, a TON of cars (millions) have been affected by the same problem. Damned dry clutch DCTs.

Well, finding and going for a better deal is fine, but calling people “crooks” seemed uncalled for. Just say “sorry we found a better deal, maybe work together again next time.”

FJ parts I imagine are Lotus hard. Theres been a FJ60 sitting at the shop for 7 months waiting for a new engine (sheared the crankshaft in half and still drove) to be found and machined...

Yes, my salesman for my last car accidentally complained about people “shopping” his numbers as we were closing our deal . . . and I had been asking for competitive bids myself, although right from the start. I think it is reasonable when I ask for something specific, but in the OP’s case he worked with the customer and added value. There should be some recognition for that, within reason.

To be honest - I completely get why he shopped other dealers. The D-Bag move was not at least giving you an opportunity AFTER he shopped.
That’s not even smart negotiating.
I get it’s annoying that he shopped after all that work, but it’s a smart customer to try and get the best price. If you don’t go back to the first guy you worked so hard with you don’t know if he’s going to be able to beat the across town deal.

yeah, i get that too, and it because they beat the deal by 3 bux a month.... seriously???? The part I love is when they dont feel like driving all the way to the dealer they got the car from and remember me because I knew everything about the cars, and they come in asking me to pair the phones and show them how the car works....

It’s not the shopping. Its that we had come to an agreement that he was coming back to take my car at my price today. He even told me I had done such a good job that he wasn’t going anywhere. Just coming back today to me.

That makes more sense now. Yes, that was a dick move on their part. Great service and assistance is always worth the extra and they should have kept their word. Now I understand you.

Yeah. Nothing that customer did constitutes lying, stealing or cheating. At all.
